A Drive to Aosta, Italy
We decided since it was so rainy to take a drive to Aosta, Italy - about 1 hour away. We had read that it has some interesting ruins and that it was an ecletic mix of France, Switzerland and Italy.
The first thing that happened after we winded our way up about 8 hairpin turns was that we had to pay a toll to go through a 6 mile tunnel - the toll was 43 Euros round trip! Oh, well, at that point, we had a bunch of cars lined up behind us, so we just paid it and proceeded on.
Luckily we had our trusty GPS - we probably went through 30 round -abouts before we arrived at the place where we parked. We certainly feel a lot more confident driving after our trip today.
The city was really fascinating - it was founded in 25 BC by the Romans at the junction of the major roads leading to what is now France and Switzerland. Here you can see a couple of pictures of some of the leftover structures from the Roman settlements.
